Perhaps the end of the Mayan calendar was not predicting the end of the world but the end of print media (as we know it). Newsweek is getting rid of its print edition entirely starting 2013. In the Daily Beast, Tina Brown writes:

Newsweek will transition to an all-digital format in early 2013. As part of this transition, the last print edition in the United States will be our Dec. 31 issue
