Not being a high-traffic site, I don’t get a lot of spam, but over the past few years, I’ve been noticing how spammer are getting creative in the comments they are posting.  Compared to spam a few years ago, which promoted the product directly in the comment, this new, “beautiful spam” compliments the blog or the post, asks for advice, or makes some sort of generic yet nice comment.In fact, some of them I would not even have known they were spam, and would have been truly grateful had it not been written by “Yourdomain.com” or “how to sleep at night.”

The interesting thing is that even though I know that it is spam, I cannot help but feel flattered by the positive comments and generous compliments. As I think about why this is so, I realize that this is very similar to the results of a study I did on social network games, where even though people knew that the other person was helping them out because of the game (and not because they were interested in improving their relationship), they still felt grateful and felt a stronger connection with that person over time.
