I grew up watching Disney animations (my father still collects Disney videos…for potential posterity) so I had to watch Enchanted when it started playing on my red-eye flight back to Boston.
It was a cute movie, but I was terribly shocked by the few “twists” there were to the traditional Disney storyline. Indeed it was ironic that the happily ever after scenario took place in New York with a divorce lawyer as the modern day Prince Charming, but shocking was the fact that this prince was a single father.
I realize that this movie was not intended wholly for child audiences, but the implicit message that it carries seems to be a reflection of the unwanted truth, what with high divorce rates and increasing proportions of eligible women over eligible men. Reality is fine, but Disney still shouldn’t have to be so politically correct.
