Intellect and physical appearance

They say that man is distinguished from animal in that he has the ability and need to know. For all the intellect that separates us from lesser creatures, however, I wonder if this ability to think makes us any superior because regardless of all the brains we have, we cannot overlook the basic “animal” traits of placing importance on physical appearance.

Indeed, there are exceptions in that sometimes a young person will be attracted to an older one of little physical beauty because of his intellect, but as a young woman, I do not see (or know of any cases in my immediate circles) in which intellect trumps appearance. It also seems unfair that regardless of my other achievements and traits, I am considered an unattractive marriage candidate because of my looks.
