The Korea Science and Engineering Foundation and the Science Ministry said yesterday that the committee that selected Hwang Woo-suk as the recipient of Korea¡¯s first ¡°Best Scientist¡± award will meet on Tuesday to decide whether to revoke that designation. Dr. Hwang has been cited for fabricating crucial elements of his cloning research.
But the ministry said that the meeting might be postponed if Seoul National University¡¯s review panel does not release its final report on the geneticist¡¯s research on Monday, as scheduled.
A biomedical research complex that the Gwanak district office planned to build near the rear gate of Seoul National University has run into funding problems. A district government official said yesterday that after Dr. Hwang¡¯s research was debunked, the funding for the project was cancelled.
